Illegal distribution, sales or exposure of one's authorized work are usually considered the biggest challange. For example, someone uses a copyrighted photo or video for his website, or uses a mobile phone to record a live performance and publish it without seeking permission from the performers. This is a serious problem, no doubt about it, but isn't it also a problem when some websites supposed to sell high-resolution images publish a thumbnail photo of 200x200 pixels (allegedly, "for preview" only) and then put up for sale that very small 200x200 image, now magnified 10 times and presented as an "original work"? Or when a record label takes a recording that sounds noticeably worse than the original with some of the tones not even recognizable and brings it out on a band's "official channel"? Wouldn't it be fair to enable consumers to check whether the recording was derived from the original source or not?
Ironically, the authors themselves often share some links paying little attention to quality and originality introduced by their sources. If musicians, photographers, writers, or filmmakers are to treat their own works the way they do, they should not wonder why no one or barely anyone wants to buy a picture, album, movie, book ... Customers don't want to spend their money on content they don't even know who it belongs to and who it was uploaded by, especially if it lacks best possible quality.
People are interested to know where the stuff they buy, read, watch, or listen to, comes from. The file should be digitally watermarked in such a way that the watermark is unobtrusive, invisible and noiseless. It must not be conspicuous, but it must pervade one's work entirely. For example, if only one part of an audio file is watermarked, someone could cut off another section missing the digital fingerprint. Or, if it is a PDF document, non-stamped pages could be excluded from the document or edited without the author's knowledge, while the reader would know nothing about it.
Generally speaking, digital fingerprints have a prevailing role in marking one's work and verifying the authorship.
DIGITAL FINGERPRINTS ATTACHED TO A PUBLICLY ACCESSIBLE DATABASE IS OF VITAL IMPORTANCE
A watermarked file must be attached to a corresponding publicly accessible database. Files are not digitally watermaked for the sake of authors only, but for the sake of their consumers too. Adding a digital stamp not attached to a relevant and searchable database may be important to the copyright owner and his agents, but in actual fact, such labeling is of no importance to the public interest because we wouldn't be able to determine who a photo, music track, video or PDF document really belongs to or how to prove or disprove the fact.

two images above do not seem to make a significant difference when you just look at them. This is essential for the algorithm we have developed - the files are digitally watermarked in such a way that the watermark is unobtrusive, invisible and noiseless. Feel free to download both pictures and perform two separate image watermark tests in order to make sure that the Image 1 does have a digital fingerprint embedded, while the Image 2 does not have any.
