Blue2Digital has designed an innovative, sustainable and functional solution that covers all aspects of copyright and intellectual property protection, primarily in the digital world.
It helps us globally and uniquely authenticate digital works that are sold, bought, listened to, read, or viewed and raise the security and credibility of the data to the highest possible level.
The procedure consists of several steps:
Create an encrypted set of files that provide evidence illustrating the progression of the author's work;
Either digitally sign your authorized work or add a digital barcode to it, depending on what you will be using the work for (check this link for more details);
Optionally, insert a digital watermark into your work to make it available for distribution across all digital platforms, PDF books and music stores, audio and video streaming services, stock photo sites and online marketplaces.
In addition to registration with an authorized copyright agency, establishing full copyright and intellectual property protection heavily relies on the solution as explained above.
Let's go through each of the steps, one by one, and see how to gather evidence to support your copyright and apply two-layer protection with a digital signature, an invisible digital barcode, and an invisible digital watermark attached to your authorized work.
#STEP 1: Gather evidence to support your copyright
Before publishing your authorized work or entering into any litigation or legal dispute regarding copyright protection or infringement, you should prepare valid and complete documentation of ownership of the work, patent or trademark.
The documentation must contain data on the final product (author's work) and supporting material on the development process of that product.
Here are some tips on how to collect copyright files:
If you are a photographer, capture the environment you are in while taking a photo; make a selfie, or make an audio or video of what you are going to do;
If you are a songwriter, record yourself while composing music and take a screenshot of the multi-channel audio editor;
If you are a writer, scan the first few pages of the book you are writing;
If you're shooting a movie, include a few "behind-the-scenes" shots;
If you're working on a hardware device development, photograph the parts that make up the device you are working on etc.
Each file that evidences the progression of your work must be sealed with an encryption key that only the copyright holder can decipher.
Although digitally encrypted, these files should not be publicly exposed.
In order to round off the process of establishing full copyright and intellectual property protection, we will act towards finalizing the product using our two-level protection tool.
The first level of protection involves adding a digital signature or digital barcode to the author's work.
#STEP 2: Sign your authorized work with a digital signature, or add a digital barcode to your work
A digital signature and a digital barcode are used to ensure the authenticity of a digital document, the integrity of its content and the identity of the document's owner.
Any change to a digitally signed file or a file with a digital barcode attached to it results in an error being reported during authentication.
There is one notable difference between a digital signature and a digital barcode, which is reflected in who and what the digital product is intended for.
A digitally signed document is usually not intended for the general public, but is available only to a certain group of people (eg within a company), who have the appropriate key to verify the digital signature and are interested in confirming the authenticity of that signature.
On the other hand, if we want to make the file publicly available to more people, we will not use a digital signature, but a digital barcode.
Compared to a digital signature, a digital barcode contains a significantly larger amount of data.
The digital barcode allows us to (invisibly) insert even a small audio or video promo clip into the final product we sell or promote (audio, video, e-book, etc.) and thus address our customers in the most personal way possible.
Digital signing, by definition, can only be applied to the original version of a file. No subsequent changes may be made to the file, as the attached digital signature will become unusable.
The same goes for the digital barcode.
This greatly limits their practical use and requires the introduction of an additional level of protection, which is adding a digital watermark to your work.
#STEP 3: Embed a digital watermark into your work
File dimensions, format, sound richness, bit rate, color, print quality, etc. are almost always affected by changes when a digital work is distributed to online sales and streaming platforms.
The version presented to the audience is often of lower quality than the original version created by the author.
Digital Chip Card Technology, or DCCT for short, is an innovative technology that guarantees the authenticity of such a digital asset.
It allows us to insert a digital watermark which cannot be removed regardless of changes to the file representing the asset.
The embedded watermark is made adaptive, invisible and inaudible and does not compromise the quality of the original file in any way.
Digital watermarking algorithms involve adding a controlled amount of AWGN (additive white Gaussian noise) coupled with mathematically generated patterns to the digital work.
Data protection is based on real-time calculations in both the frequency and spatial domains.
If the watermark can be extracted from the file and clearly recognized, the quality of the file is confirmed to have been preserved.
On the other hand, failure to extract and recognize the watermark means that the quality of the file has been significantly degraded.
Once inserted, the digital watermark becomes an integral part of the whole.
The watermarked files produced are easy to use, reliable and robust. They are available for distribution to digital music stores, stock photo sites, video streaming services, e-book stores, and online marketplaces. You can use them as evidence in legal disputes and litigation.
